If you’re an iPad user, you might have noticed that the latest versions have a different type of USB charging connector.

Older models use the Lightning port. It was Apple’s go-to connector for many years and is a small, reversible connector that was used to charge most Apple devices, iPods, iPhones, and iPads.

However, since 2024, Apple has switched over to USB-C connectors. It’s likely to remain the standard connector for iPhones and iPads for the foreseeable future.

Why Did Apple Switch To USB-C?

Let’s clear this up right away – Apple didn’t really want to switch to the USB-C connector. The company was happy with the lightning connector. Changing it has caused them quite a bit of hassle.

The main reason for the switch to USB-C is a new European Union regulation that aims to reduce electrical waste by making charging cables more universal.

Apple resisted the change for a while, but ultimately, they have to comply with the new rules. Therefore, since late 2023, all new Apple devices will be fitted with USB-C compatible charging ports, rather than lightning connectors.

What’s the Difference Between Lightning and USB-C?

  • Speed and Versatility: When tested, USB-C tends to be faster and more versatile than Lightning. USB-C transfers data more quickly and allows for slightly faster charging. It also handles video output, making it easier to connect your iPad to external monitors or TV screens.
  • Convenient Compatibility: USB-C is pretty much the universal standard these days. This doesn’t just go for Apple devices, but across the whole tech industry. In other words, USB-C cables are compatible with a wide range of devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets from other brands.

How Does This Impact You?

If you’ve used Apple devices for years, you’ve probably got a drawer full of Lightning cables somewhere at home. Apple’s switch to USB-C means those old cables and accessories won’t work with the latest iPads and iPhones, unless you have an adapter.

The upside is – USB-C is more future-proof. It’s likely to be around for many years to come, so buying USB-C accessories now makes sense anyway. And let’s be honest, it’s pointless resisting this switch if you want to have the most up-to-date devices and gadgets.

Should You Make the Switch?

If you’re using an older iPad with a Lightning connector and it still serves you well, there’s no rush to upgrade.

But if you’re thinking about upgrading to a new iPad or iPhone, then USB-C is the way forward. You’ll get a more versatile and powerful device that’s ready for the future of tech.
